Having a water carbonator at home has been an increasing trend for a while now. Sparkling water makers that change still water to sparkling have not only become more popular but also more modern.

Sodastream, the most popular brand in this
market, has changed the concept of these items from a useful tool to a lasting necessity
to have at home. As the design became more modern, its operation became as
simple as pressing a button. By mixing these qualities, the results are an
inviting machine that sits in the kitchen and only asks to be pressed to change
that still water, into sparkling.

The question asked the most is, ‘Is Sodastream worth it?’ Is it just a marketing hoax? Is Sodastream leveraging on the satisfaction resulting from the water getting carbonated? We will try tonanswer this question in the post.

Sodastream with its Bottle

Functioning:

The water carbonator works in a straightforward way. What is needed are a bottle of water, a CO2 container and a machine. The bottle of water can be attached to the CO2 dispenser and the gas container usually goes to the back. The latter does not last forever but needs to be changed. Usually, these contain 425 grams of CO2 which on paper allows you to fizz 80L, but the truth is far from this as most times they last from 50L to 60L.

Also, the bottles need to be changed as they last around two years. Once every item is in position, by pressing the button or using the lever, depending on the machine, just like magic, the still water becomes sparkling as the Co2 is added to it.

Sodastream Machines

First of all, it is necessary to understand the whole range of products that Sodastream has on the market, and they are six: Sodastream Spirit, Sodastream One Touch, Sodastream Crystal, Sodastream Genesis, Terra, Duo, Art).

Probably the most classic of choices between the ones offered by the company, Sodastream Spirit is a popular one among consumers. This water carbonator is characterised by a button at the top. This button serves the purpose of setting how fizzy the water in the bottle will become. The more times the button gets pressed, the more sparkling the water is.

Slightly different is the Sodastream One Touch. Regarding the design, this is nearly identical to the above-mentioned model apart from the fact that on this there are three buttons instead of one and it is completely electric. These three buttons’ aim is to show the level of fizziness the water can reach. Basically, instead of pressing more times the same button, as in the Sodastream Spirit, on the One Touch, you press a button once, which kind of makes clear where they got the name from.

The Sodastream Crystal instead goes back to the principle of having one button to set the fizziness of the water as it has a big one on top that can be pressed more times to make the water more sparkling. On this one, the design slightly differs from the previously mentioned models as it is increasingly slender and elegant. And let’s not forget about the carafe that is entirely made of crystal.

The design of the Sodastream Genesis resembles the previously mentioned Crystal one but without the crystal. It can be defined as a more elegant version of the Spirit as its design again leans towards the elegance of the crystal.

Instead, the Sodastream Terra looks like the classic Sodastream Spirit but with a few subtle differences. The company’s aim with this one was to design a sparkling water maker more user-friendly than the previously mentioned models. It is for this reason that the CO2 bottle does not need to be screwed to the back anymore but they are connected by a lever, the water bottle is dishwasher safe, and the button on top of the machine is larger.

The Sodastream Art does use the lever on the back like the Terra and has a dishwasher-safe bottle like the latter. The only noticeable difference is the more captivating design and the lever on the side which substitutes the button that used to set the fizziness of the water. This can be regarded as a retro design as it resembles past Sodastreams.

Finally, the Sodastream Duo, gets its name from its unique feature: the possibility of using it both with glass, and plastic bottles. In fact, it comes with both bottles.

Is Soda stream Cost-effective?

Firstly, by all means, this is a personal point of view resulting from research and personal experience. Sodastream is undoubtedly a great company and one that can be trusted. The quality standards of every product in their range are very high and if one wants a sparkling water maker, they surely can deliver to you one that works. But is it worth the investment?

Before answering, it is useful to know that by checking their Amazon page it is possible to find the same product sold on the website for less money, and delivered from their official store.

Secondly, in theory, these devices save money as they eliminate the need for buying sparkling water. This can be verified by measuring the amount saved per glass of sparkling water.  First of all, a gas canister goes around 23 pounds and will make sparkling around 55 litres of still water. By hypothesizing that a glass is around 330 ml we can make: 23/ 55000 ml * 330ml= 0.138 per every 330 ml glass.

So, per every glass one is saving 0.14 pens!

Is Sodastream worth it?

In conclusion, every Sodastream product is one that saves money, is a more ecological choice and saves the hassle of taking the heavy bottles of sparkling water from the supermarket to home. So, in the end, if one is a heavy drinker of sparkling water, it is definitely a smart investment.
